Happy New Year!

Thanks to you, our second Student Safety Net Fund campaign was a huge success—this fund allows us to help students meet their basic needs (related to food, rent, utilities, medical, and childcare expenses) and stay on track to achieve their goals in 2022. Next month, you'll receive our final campaign update as well as one more student recipe video!

Our Upward Scholars Family is Growing

Together, we will retain our current students in 2022 and are also thrilled to announce that this term marks the first phase of our expansion outside of San Mateo County! Our team is hard at work with our new partners—the Northern Alameda Adult Education Collective—to recruit and enroll adult immigrant students attending the Peralta Community College District.

This month, we also hired our very first Student Intern! Elías Hernández is an Upward Scholars student from Mexico and is currently completing the ESL courses at Cañada College. In Mexico, Elías studied communication sciences so in his role as Student Intern he will support Upward Scholars' social media channels, website, and student newsletter, among other things.

As our student body and staff change, so does our board. Join us in welcoming Rodrigo Espinosa and Eric Takaha to the Upward Scholars Board of Directors. 👏

Virtual Conversation Club

Upward Scholars Conversation Club is an ideal way to contribute if you are eager to engage with Upward Scholars students. Students build self-confidence in their English conversation skills via this safe, friendly, and welcoming virtual environment.

Here, we focus on topics that stimulate and inspire students’ educational journeys while supporting them in their English listening and speaking skills development.
