Demographics

Upward Scholars students are English learners who live at or below the poverty line. But our students are much more than just the challenges and hardships they encounter—they are striving to better their own lives and their families’ lives. They are breaking down barriers that help right the wrongs of economic and racial disparities in the Bay Area.

Student Impact in 2021

in Safety Net Funds assisted 74 students and their families with basic needs

34 students

participated in MoveUp Career Development Programs:

  • ¡Habla Más! — training to help students provide Spanish lessons, interpretation, and translation services for pay

  • NannyUp — workshops to support childcare providers with business skills

  • BusinessUp and BusinessPro — training for student entrepreneurs

7 students

started their own businesses (i.e., bakery, floral design shop, family childcare, moving company, DJ, hot dog cart) to earn family sustaining wages and gain economic mobility

117 volunteer tutors, mentors, & conversation partners

fostered success with 141 students

received fresh and healthy vegan food options through our collaboration with Vegan Outreach or Upward Scholars grocery gift cards to fight food insecurity

received free computers ensuring they attended virtual classes and trainings to help them achieve their goals

completed the PASS Certificate in English as a Second Language

received certificates of completion (i.e., accounting, early childhood education, medical assisting, human services)
