Please note that the Upward Scholars staff will be on Winter Break from December 23 to January 3. We will not be working during this time, so if you need to reach us, please use email. We look forward to reconnecting with you on January 4. Happy holidays!

Spring 2023 Community College Enrollment

SMCCD & PCCD Students: Enrollment for Spring 2023 is NOW OPEN! Please enroll at your community college for the Spring 2023 semester BEFORE completing the Upward Scholars Application.

Cañada's Super Saturday Registration Event

Cañada College is hosting its Super Saturday iCan Register event on Saturday, January 7, 2023, from 9 am to 1 pm to help students like you register for the Spring 2023 semester.

There will be support stations on site, including counseling, admissions, registration, financial aid, and more. There will also be food, music, and a craft table for children.

BACHAC Community Mammograms

Bay Area Community Health Advisory Council (BACHAC) in partnership with Mills Peninsula and the Peninsula Health Care District is honored to offer free early-detection mammograms to uninsured women in the community.

If you would like to register to receive your mammogram through this program, please call Evelia Chairez at 650.483.9663 or Julio Campos at 650.888.6071. Whether or not you have health insurance, you may qualify for financial assistance.

An early-detection mammogram is for you if:

  • You have not had a mammogram in the past year,

  • If you do not have symptoms such as pain, lumps, or redness in the breast area,

  • If you are over 40 years old.

Tax-Aid

Tax-Aid offers free tax help for households that earn less than $58,000. Their expert Bay Area tax volunteers give you the confidence of properly prepared taxes and can offer tax support and advice year-round in your preferred language. They can even help you claim your Child Tax Credit if you haven't already done so. Click here to learn more. Their website is available in multiple languages.

External Employment Opportunities

Expanded Learning Opportunities Program

Are you a talented, enthusiastic, and diverse individual looking to impact students positively? Join Community-Based Organizations in supporting Redwood City School District students in their extended day learning programs! The Expanded Learning Opportunities Program brings together the Redwood City School District and multiple Community-Based Organizations to support Redwood City School District students in an Extended Day Program. This is a paid position opportunity through one of the partner community-based organizations. They will train and support you in sparking curiosity and illuminating the world of opportunity available through education. Complete the interest form here.

Rosalie Rendu Center Administrative Assistant

The Rosalie Rendu Center is hiring an Administrative Assistant to maintain student, volunteer, and donor databases; provide communication and clerical support to the Executive Director and other staff members; and assist in organizing program-related activities. The following is a list of external scholarships with upcoming deadlines. Click on the links to learn more about each scholarship.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Student

  • Application Deadline: January 12, 2023

  • Some qualifications: transferring to a 4-year university in fall 2023; 3.5 GPA or higher

Providing Educational Opportunities (PEO) for Women

  • Application Deadline: January 10, 2023

  • Some qualifications: female; legal permanent resident or citizen; in good academic standing

  • If you want to apply, please let me know. All applicants need a recommendation from Upward Scholars. 

Curry Award for Girls and Young Women

  • Application Deadline: January 20, 2023

  • Some qualifications: female aged 18–26; 3.3 GPA or higher; San Mateo County resident

Crain Scholarship Program

  • Application Deadline: January 24, 2023

  • Some qualifications: community involvement; 3.5 GPA or better; high school or equivalent in San Mateo or Santa Clara County; U.S. citizen

10,000 Degrees Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: March 2, 2023

  • Some qualifications: full-time student

Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: March 7, 2023

  • Some qualifications: live in San Bruno or attend Skyline College; first-year student at a community college or transfer student from a community college to a four-year university; open to undocumented students; full-time student

Immigrants Rising List of Scholarships and Fellowships

Immigrants Rising has curated this list of scholarships and fellowships that don’t require proof of U.S. citizenship. The list has general application eligibility requirements, including education level, region/state, and immigration status (e.g. DACA, TPS, in-state tuition eligibility). Only opportunities with due dates within the next 180 days are shown in the list. Use the filters to find scholarships that could be right for you and click on the scholarship to learn more and apply!
