Dear Upward Scholars students,

Congratulations on (almost) getting through finals! If you're not done yet, you are so close to the end. We believe in you, so keep going to finish the semester off strong!

Please read through this month's newsletter as it includes an "Office Closure announcement, an Urgent Call for Student Recipes for our Safety Net Fund fundraising campaign, the Returning Student Application, and upcoming scholarships.

Upward Scholars "Office" Closure

Please note that the entire Upward Scholars staff will be on Winter Break from December 20th to January 3rd. We will not be working during this time, so if you need to reach us, please use email. We look forward to connecting with you all on January 4th. Happy Holidays!

Recipes Needed for our Student Safety Net Fund: Recipe for Generosity Campaign!

At the end of our Safety Net Fund: Recipe for Generosity fundraising campaign, we will thank our donors by sharing a cookbook with all of YOUR favorite recipes! Please send your favorite recipe with measured ingredients and step-by-step detailed instructions to me (jessica@upwardscholars.org) and to Upward Scholars student Elías (josehernandeza@my.smccd.edu)—who will be helping me compile the recipes over the winter break.

What to include in your submission:

  • Your name

  • Name of dish

  • List of measured ingredients

  • Step-by step-instructions

  • Why this dish is important to you

  • Photo of dish (optional)

  • How long you've been with Upward Scholars

  • Your academic and career goals

Submissions should be in English, but we can also accept them in Spanish. We are unable to translate other languages at this time

Upward Scholars Returning Student Application

The Upward Scholars Returning Student Application is now open. Please apply before 5 pm on Thursday, February 3, 2022 to be considered.

If you know any prospective students interested in joining Upward Scholars, please have them contact Marta Dugarte in the new year at marta@upwardscholars.org.

Upcoming Scholarships

The following is a list of external scholarships with upcoming deadlines. Click on the links to learn more about each scholarship.

NOTE: If you need help applying to any of these, contact Jessica at jessica@upwardscholars.org to be paired with a volunteer who can work with you one-on-one.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Student

  • Application Deadline: January 10, 2022

  • Some qualifications: transferring to a 4-year university in fall 2022; 3.5 GPA or higher

Providing Educational Opportunities (PEO) for Women

  • Application Deadline: January 10, 2022

  • Some qualifications: female; legal permanent resident or citizen; in good academic standing

  • If you want to apply, please let me know. All applicants need a recommendation from Upward Scholars.

Curry Award for Girls and Young Women

  • Application Deadline: January 24, 2022

  • Some qualifications: female aged 18–26; 3.3 GPA or higher; San Mateo County resident

Crain Scholarship Program

  • Application Deadline: January 24, 2022

  • Some qualifications: community involvement; 3.5 GPA or better; high school or equivalent in San Mateo or Santa Clara County; U.S. citizen

Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: March 1, 2022

  • Some qualifications: live in San Bruno or attend Skyline College; first-year student at a community college or transfer student from a community college to a four-year university; open to undocumented students; full-time student

10,000 Degrees Scholarship

  • Application Deadline: March 2, 2022

  • Some qualifications: full-time student
