Upward Scholars celebrates its new name
On November 5th, Upward Scholars Board members and staff, along with longtime volunteers and members of the Upward Scholars Student Speaker's Bureau, celebrated the organization's new name.
Upward Scholars founder and executive director Elizabeth Weal explained the rationale for the new name this way: "Upward Scholars describes precisely what we do: Empower low-income adults to 'move up' by continuing their education, getting better jobs, and gaining the confidence to advocate for their children," Elizabeth said. "Our new name also embodies our transition from a school-based organization that exclusively serves students from Sequoia Adult School to a community organization that supports students who are graduates of adult schools and community-based organizations throughout San Mateo County."
The culmination of the evening was an Upward Scholars tres leches cake, complete with logo, prepared by baker and Upward Scholars alum Mireya Niño.
