Student Spotlight: “I finally found a good use for the ironing board again”

Claudia and her son share the ironing board to do their homework and attend virtual classes.

“I finally found a good use for the ironing board again,” Claudia posted on her social media, attaching this picture. From the start of the pandemic, Claudia realized room was limited in her one-bedroom home for her two children, ages 9 and 13, and her to continue learning at a distance. In the short term, she set up her daughter in the bedroom and her son in the kitchen while she sat outdoors to virtually attend her classes at Cañada College.

As time went on, the family realized it wasn't the best setup. Claudia thought about their situation, looked around to see what she could find, and then, she saw it — the ironing board. “I knew it would be perfect.” The ironing board became the perfect space for her and her son to share. “Now I tell him we have a better space than his sister. Our ‘desk’ is bigger than hers!”

In addition to an improved workspace, Claudia also benefits from meeting with an Upward Scholars tutor. “I am so glad I get to work with Marissa Reitsma because she helps me with everything, even practicing my English. This has helped me so much – at work, too.”

Prior to joining Upward Scholars, Claudia refused to make announcements on the intercom at her job because she was insecure about her English skills. Her confidence increased after working with her tutor, “My coworkers are shocked at how much I make announcements now. I couldn't do this without Marissa's help.” She is looking forward to attending the virtual Conversation Club this November to take advantage of yet another opportunity to practice English.

Thanks to your continued support Claudia received special grocery gift cards from us every month since March. Then in July, when our partnership with Vegan Outreach began, she started receiving bi-monthly boxes of produce to her home. “Your help makes the days easier and reminds me that we are not alone during this pandemic.”

Together, we impact not only our students but their families and communities as well. “I feel so proud of my mom because she studies no matter what,” says Scarlett, Claudia’s daughter. “Seeing my mom in college makes me excited to go in the future.”
